How do I get it to work? The docs are not very clear
xPopupArrowImage "$LSImageFolder$popup_arrow_triangle.png"
 xPopupArrowHeight 8
 xPopupArrowWidth 8
 xPopupArrowOffset 1

...nada. Yet there's no config for me to compare against, so I don't know what I'm doing wrong, either.

You've got it right, I think. It may be a bug. For me it worked in previous versions of xPopup; try it in 0.6 and it works as expected.

Edit: cancel that, didn't see there's a new version out, and it works again. Mostly. new issue though:
my arrow has Magic Pink so that I can use it for the ActiveArrow and it is surrounded by the ActiveFolder color. But now the desktop bleeds through. Can I turn RealTransparency OFF?

You're right--it does appear to be a bug. Using 0.6, it works fine. I'm having the problem in 0.8, BTW.
