I was told that I might be able to configure xlable to work as an email checker (like LSMail used to).....where I could configure it to login to a pop3 server at a given interval (every 5 or 10 min usually) and if it saw new mail it would display whatever (new mail icons, a message like "new: 5" etc etc).
I've tried looking through the help.chm file that came with xlable, as well as looked around in the forums but I can't find anything. Does anyone know of a theme that already has this functionality or know where I can find some examples of how to do this?

well, it's not possible to recieve a mail by xLabel. maybe someone found a "hack" to display the header of the recieved mail in a label, but xLabel itself is not able to do

Hmmmm.....I'm not actually trying to receive main in the label, just check and display something in the event that new mail is on the server.....still no dice?

lsmail is what you are looking for, I believe.
Set up lsmail.
Set up the label(s).
The labels then show the number of new messages, and maybe even headers, as mail is checked.
Lsmail can be used on its own, but xLabel should offer more flexibility.
there're probably tons of ideas which modules could be included into xlabel, but litestep is about modularity, and although xlabel may have a "point" so far, making a monster module out of it would be overkill in my opinion... the more you include, the more complex and confusing it will become, and chances are increasing that either something is broken accidently or a module update will force you to make changes to your theme.

xLabel is created for all possible painting stuff, nothing more and nothing less
only thing is that textedit was includet, but this had to be, caused by saving position routines for the desktop support. that's the only cause.
as long as andymon will develop on xlabel, it will never be able to check for emails, usable as a vwm or making coffee...
I absolut agree with ElkMonster, a label should be a label, nothing more and nothing less. xLabel is even now a very large and feature rich module, and more features will just complicate things much more then they're now (has anyone checked the size of the readme?? )
ah, btw:
xLabel is now able to have a 8, 16 bit display color depth with all features, it will not look ugly anymore

As GothsSecret already pointed out, i made xLabel to enable "ALL" visual parts a Theme element could need. So an E-mail Checker or other "specific" features will never come, but the module developer can for sure use the xLabel internals to display such features as described.
LSSyndication does this already for instance.
So tell the LSMail developer that he can/should add a similar support to LSMail.

I agree too with the modularity philosophy - it's what makes Litestep.
And I Litestep.
But think about it - many of the other modules displaying something haven't been updated for a long time, and it's not very likely they will.
No alphamap support, none of the niceties of xLabel.
And besides, isn't the 'Light' edition there to keep the minimalists happy?

xLabel has plenty of features. It might eb able to use a few more, but not that go *too* far out of its scope. IMO, more modules should be service-/widget-like, setting off !bangs every now and then, letting modules like mzscript and xLabel do the rest of the work for them. It's a very unix-like view; but that in itself makes it hard to argue with , as even the most arcane and inefficient methods (string-based piping, anyone?) offer solid foundations for very complex integrated systems.
Making coffee isn't a future feature?! [ Edited Thu Oct 28 2004, 05:56PM ]

Thanks a lot for your GREAT work guis , xmodules are transforming the Litestep shell in a much more fancy/varsatile thing.

>Andymon - woot!
>GothsSecret - If necessary, you could probably reduce the gaps between the center and the sides, for those with lower resolutions (not me, I'm at 1280x1024!).

Just wanna tell:
HighColor(16bit) is coming for all xModules in the near future, finally.

hehe, now I like it too, I wassn't sure if it'll look good if we put a second menu right handed but now it's ok, so no need for a complete change anymore

Hello everyone!
This layout is just fine, don't get why you want to change it?!
